Laminated Wooden Box

Jewellery Box
I created this box as a jewellery holder, but also to practice different joinery and finishing techniques.

I used Jelutong wood for the main body of the box, and at each joint in the box, I used a different technique. The techniques I used were a simple dowel joint, a mitred joint, a lap joint, and a more complex box joint. I glued these joints together with wood glue and attached the main frame of the box onto a thin layer of plywood to create the base of the box.

I then formed the lid of the box from strips of oak and pine wood, which I glued together and clamped to create the laminated effect. I then sanded the lid down to ensure a smooth and clean finish. To ensure the lid fit well in the box, I glued a small square of plywood to the inside of the lid.

To create extra storage space in the box, I made a small tray from clear acrylic, which I cut using a laser cutter. I used box joints at each corner of the tray and glued them together using acrylic cement to ensure they were very strong. I added two further strips of plywood inside the box to act as a shelf for the tray to rest on.

I finished the box by giving it three coats of Danish oil to protect it from wear and tear and give a nice coloured finish.
